University of Houston sophomore Kyle Pilgrim is one shot back after Friday’s opening round of the Bayou City Collegiate Championship.
Pilgrim, who is competing as an individual, shot a 4-under par 68 on the Tournament Course at Redstone Golf Club.
Texas’ Brax McCarthy leads at 5-under 67.
Second-ranked Texas leads the team competition with an opening-round 285, just ahead of Baylor (286) and Charlotte (289).
Chattanooga, UT-Arlington and East Carolina are tied for fourth at 290. Louisiana Tech is seventh at 291, UTSA (292) is eighth and Houston is in a three-way tie for ninth with South Carolina and Houston Baptist at 294.
Rice is last in the 15-team field after shooting an opening round 309.
Roman Robledo and Vincent Martino led the Cougars with a 1-over 73, tied for 27th place.
The 54-hole tournament continues with the second round beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday’s final round at 8:30 a.m.
